The Santa Rosa Hitchhiker Murders were a series of at least seven unsolved homicides involving female hitchhikers that took place in Sonoma County and Santa Rosa of the North Bay area of California in 1972 and 1973. All of the victims were found nude in rural areas near steep embankments and/or in creek beds near roads.

The victims were:

Maureen Sterling and Yvonne Weber, Kim Wendy Allen, Lori Lee Kursa, Carolyn Davis, Theresa Walsh, and one who still remains unidentified.

Possible victims were:

Lisa Smith, and Jeannette Kamahele. In 1975, the Federal Bureau of Investigation issued a report stating that fourteen unsolved homicides between 1972 and 1974 were committed by the same perpetrator.

The suspects are:

The Zodiac Killer, Arthur Leigh Allen, Ted Bundy, and a 41-year-old Santa Rosa Junior College creative writing instructor. Kenneth Bianchi and Angelo Buono, Jr., the Hillside Stranglers of Los Angeles, were also considered suspects at one time.

Profile of the Original Night Stalker

After criminologists matched serological evidence found at the southern California murder scenes, a psychological profile of the Original Night Stalker was compiled. According to Leslie D’Ambrosia, who was the primary author of the profile, it’s likely that the Original Night Stalker would possess the following characteristics:

White male

Emotional age of 26 to 30 at the time the crimes were committed

Likely began as a voyeur in his late teens or early twenties.

Lived and/or worked near Ventura, California in 1980

Had some means of income, but did not work in the early morning hours

Drove a well-maintained car

Dressed well and would not stand out in upscale neighborhoods

Would appear harmless

Intelligent and articulate

Neat and well-organized in his personal life

Possibly unmarried and did not enter into long-term relationships

Would have been described by those who knew him as arrogant, domineering, manipulative, and a chronic liar

Had some knowledge of police investigative methods and evidence gathering techniques

Was a skilled and experienced cat burglar and may have begun that way

Was in good physical condition

Had a criminal record as a teenager which was expunged

Engaged in sex with prostitutes

Peeped into the windows of many potential victims who were not attacked

Engaged in deviant paraphilic behavior and brutal sex in his personal life

Sexually functional and capable of ejaculation with consenting and non-consenting partners

Self-assured and confident in his abilities

Hated women for real or perceived wrongs

Would continue committing violent crimes until incapacitated by prison, death, or some other intervention

If married, probably has a submissive spouse who tolerated his sexually deviant behavior

In addition to describing the characteristics of the Original Night Stalker, the profile also speculates about the fate of the slayer. According to the profile, the Original Night Stalker could have been incarcerated following Janelle Cruz’ murder or killed in the commission of a similar crime (however, the last known contact with the Original Night Stalker was in 1991 when he made a taunting phone call to one of his victims). As to the latter point, the profile indicates that law enforcement agencies should look into attempted hot prowl burglaries in the late 1980s which resulted in the death of a lone male offender. The profile also indicates that there is a slight chance the Original Night Stalker committed suicide; furthermore, it would be unlikely that he is confined in a mental institution.

The profile reveals that following the original homicides in this series, teletypes were broadcast to law enforcement agencies throughout the United States. These teletypes requested information on similar home invasion attacks involving sexual assault, murder, bludgeoning, multiple victims, and/or bondage. As of 2011, no similar crimes have been reported in the United States. The profile propounds the possibility, however, that the Original Night Stalker could have continued committing his crimes in another country where records were not consulted for linkage purposes.

As a psychological profile is based on a probabilistic analysis, its accuracy cannot be assessed before the offender has been apprehended.

The Original Night Stalker/East Area Rapist case was the motivating factor in the passage of legislation leading to the establishment of California’s DNA database, which authorizes the collection of the DNA of all the accused and convicted felons in California. California’s DNA data retrieval and storage program is considered by experts to be second only to Virginia’s in size and effectiveness in solving cold cases. While the California DNA database motivated by this case has solved numerous previously unsolved cold cases across the country, the original case remains unsolved.

Victims of Christopher Worrell and James Miller

December 23, 1976: Veronica Knight, 18
Veronica had become separated from her friend while shopping and accepted a ride home. Miller claims they talked her into going for a drive in the Adelaide foothills. Worrell parked while Miller went for a walk. Returning to the car he found Veronica dead and allegedly angrily confronted Worrell who pulled a knife and threatened him. Worrell was in a “black” mood and wouldn’t talk, Miller helped him dump the body at Truro. The next morning they both returned to work.

January 2, 1977: Tania Kenny, 15
Miller and Worrell picked up Tania who had just arrived in the city after hichhiking from Victor Harbour. They drove to Miller’s sister’s home and Miller sat in the car while Worrell and Tania went inside. Worrell later returned and asked for help. Allegedly an argument occurred and Worrell threatened to kill Miller if he did not help. That night they buried Tania at Wingfield.

January 21, 1977: Juliet Mykyta, 16
Julie was waiting at a bus stop after finishing a part time job in the city when Worrell offered her a lift home. Instead he drove her to Port Wakefield. This time Miller sat in the car while Worrell tied her up. This was not unusual behaviour as “it was Worrell’s kink” so miller though nothing of it. Miller alleges he then went to take a walk but turned around after hearing a disturbance. Julie was out of the car and falling to the ground. Worrell turned her over and began strangling her. Miller claims he tried to pull him off but was not strong enough and again Worrell threatened to kill him. Later Julie joined the others at Truro.

February 6, 1977: Sylvia Pittman, 16
Picked up as she waited for a train at the Adelaide Railway Station. They drove to the Wingfield area where Miller went for a walk and later helped dispose of the body at Truro.

February 7, 1977: Vickie Howell, 26
Worrell rang Miller to pick him up from the Adelaide Post Office. When he arrived Vickie was already with him. Vikie had recently separated from her husband and was happy to go with them to Nuriootpa. Stopping the car Miller went for a walk but soon returned to find everything ok so he then took a longer walk. When he returned Vickie was dead and Worrell was in a rage. Miller claims he cursed and abused Worrell expecting to be killed himself but Worrell said nothing. Vickie was then taken to Truro.

February 9, 1977: Connie Iordanides, 16 (AKA Connie Jordan)
Picked up in the city centre and offered a lift home Connie became frightened when then they drove in the wrong direction. Miller stopped at Wingfield and Worrell forced the screaming girl into the back seat while Miller did nothing. He left the car for a while and after returning drove to Truro.

February 12, 1977: Deborah Lamb, 20
Deborah was hitchhiking on West Terrace when picked up. They drove to Port Gawler where Miller went for his walk. When he returned to the car Deborah was not there but worrell was pushing sand into a hole with his foot. Deborah was later found buried at the spot.

February 19, 1977: Deborah Skuse (killed in the motor accident that claimed Worrell’s life)

Deborah was the girlfriend of a friend. After he broke up with her Miller and Worrell took her to mount Gambier for the weekend but Worrell got in one of his “black” moods so they decided to return to Adelaide on the Saturday afternoon. Worrell was driving when the car blew a tyre and rolled several times throwing all three onto the road. Worrell and Deborah died while Miller broke his shoulderblade.

All the victims had been strangled although there was a strong suspicion that the last of the victims, Deborah Lamb, had been alive when buried.

Anyone familiar with the Club Kids (late 1980s, early 1990s New York) knew who Michael Alig was, as he was the co-founder. At the time, Alig was a very well known and outrageous party promoter. He was the king of the Underground Club Scene. It is known he was heavily addicted to drugs.

In 1996, Alig murdered his drug dealer/friend Angel Melendez over a drug related dispute.

His story was told by close friend and fellow Club Kid James St. James in a book titled Party Monster. Shortly afterwards, it was made into a movie, starring Macaulay Culkin as Michael Alig and Seth Green as James St. James. Other well-known actors and actresses in Party Monster included Marilyn Manson, Chloe Sevigny, Dylan McDermott, Mia Kirshner, Wilmer Valderrama, and Natasha Lyonne.

Alig is currently doing his time at the Elmira Correctional Facility in New York. It is unknown when he will be released.

On January 15, 1947, a passerby spotted her nude body in a vacant lot near Hollywood. Her body, cut in half, was bruised and beaten. Grass had reportedly been forced into her vagina, and she had reportedly been sodomized after death.
